This is Natural Life Puppy Dry Food
For my dobermans, no I would not use this food.
First of all the first ingredient isn’t "MEAT", who really knows what ‘meal’ really is?
Second, there is way too high of a Copper content. Therefore I would fear Copper toxicosis.
i feed and recommend http://www.frrco.com/121668
there is a money back guarantee, free shipping, you feed less because it’s high quality, and a small bag will last your chi for quite some time!
i get a lot of compliments from the vet on my dogs’ health!
I wasn’t sure if this was a trick question?
On the surface this seems to be a decent food. No wheat gluten (linked to recalls) or corn (linked to allergies).
I disagree with the posts which say that "meal" is not as good as whole meat. It depends…
Whole meat (be it chicken, beef, lamb, fish) contains a lot of water weight. Once that water evaporates in the kibble-making process, the percentage of protein in the food drops dramatically. Since there is only one protein source in this food, I personally would rather see lamb meal than simply lamb. Better yet would be a food that lists "lamb, lamb meal, and so on…" General rule of thumb, if it starts out with a whole meat, then there should be another animal protein source within the top 2-3 ingredients.
What should be rejected/avoided are meat or poultry "by-products" as it is nearly impossible to ascertain the quality of "by-products".
You should also reject protein products not listed by species, such as "animal fat" or "meat meal"; therefore "chicken fat" is OK.
Look for whole grains and vegetables.
Avoid foods with lots of artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. Rosemary and vitamins A & C (all of which this food contains) are all good natural preservatives. A healthy product made with quality ingredients shouldn’t need to add things like color or flavor to make it look or taste better.
Bottom line, if your puppy has a glossy coat, itch-free skin, bright clear eyes and is happy and alert, this is a good product for it. What’s best for every dog is different.
Hope this helps
it’s not bad. Too high a protein and fat content for a larger breed, but probably fine for a small one. I would like to see more meat in it, but it’s much better than a lot on the market.
just use pedigree
I’d want to know the brand name which you didn’t give.
It looks decent, but you didn’t say if this is the puppy food of this brand.
A puppy should be fed one of the following:
- a puppy food for the right SIZE breed – e.g. large breed puppy food for a large breed dog, small breed puppy food for a small breed dog.
- raw feed is a good alternative, but you have to have the right additives as well since raw meat can lack some nutrients the dog needs.
- cooked food is liked by some, as your first responder mentioned, but I prefer raw. That’s more natural to the dog. Dogs in the wild never learned how to cook their food, so why should I?
Don’t forget to get dog vitamins for t he pup as well.
The choice is really YOURS …. we can only suggest.
I wouldn’t feed it to my Great Dane puppies. The fat content is not high enough to sustain their energy without overfeeding them. Maybe low energy, small breed puppies could do well with it, though. The things you don’t want to give them (wheat and soy) are not in it.
(Just my opinion, based on what I have seen works well for my giant breed puppies.)
Looks like all good stuff. What brand is it? Is it for puppies?
These are important.
Possibly. It does depend on the breed. For example, I own a great dane and that is too much protein for a giant breed. High protein encourages fast bone growth. To have the healthiest very large dog with strong bones, one needs lower protein to regulate bone growth.
My beagle would have been just fine with this food as a puppy. It is excellent as adult food for all breeds.
It’s certainly not a BAD food. There is not BHT, BHA, "meat digest," or by products in there. It also doesn’t have any wheat or corn gluten, which is good.
However, There are a couple of preservatives that make me a little uncomfortable. And it doesn’t have a lot of meat in it.
I would give it 7.5-8 on a 10 point scale.
If you have a really active or larger dog, I would recommend trying to find something with more meat like Innova Evo, but otherwise you’re doing all right!!
Its not bad food but I am always a little concerned when the manufacturer uses meat meal instead of actual meat because you don’t know exactly what’s in it. Otherwise the rest of the ingredients look good.
No. i cook for my dog. I don’t trust ANY dog food to offer complete and personalized nutrition. But as awful as most dog foods are, this doesn’t look too bad.
Well, personally, I wouldn’t. I have heard from numerous sources that the first ingrediant should be a meat product, not a by-product or a meal. I always try to find a food with meat listed first.
Sounds like a decent food to me – doesn’t contain corn, wheat, or soy – all of which I try to stay away from.
Meal is completely different from by-products. Lamb meal is actually a better source of protein than just lamb. In a meal, in this case, Lamb Meal, it means the water has been removed from the lamb meat prior to it being used. This is a good thing because it means more actual meat protein is going into the food per volume and less water. Meal *Does NOT* contain hoofs, beaks, feathers, etc. that one would find in By-Products. It’s a point that is commonly confused by people.
