<p>This year marks a major turning point in the theory of wellness and the prevention of disease. The drug-based paradigm of Western medicine is crumbling under the weight of its own massive fraud. It is the dawn of a new era.</p>
<p> The following is a list of the Top 10 health breakthroughs of 2008. I know there are many other possible candidates for this Top 10 list. This is my version of the highlights that made 2008 special.</p>
<p> #10 &#8212; The Mayo Clinic Places One Foot in the Door of the Real World</p>
<p> Miracles never cease and it appears that the Mayo Clinic is trying to enter the 21st century with at least a finger on the nutritional pulse of reality. In May they put out a press release stating that &#8216;Thousands of research studies have documented how the oils known as omega-3 fatty acids can benefit the cardiovascular system, particularly among people diagnosed with coronary artery disease&amp;The most compelling evidence for the cardiovascular benefit provided by omega-3 fatty acids comes from three large controlled trials of 32,000 participants randomized to receive omega-3 fatty acid supplements containing DHA and EPA&amp;.These trials showed reductions in cardiovascular events of 19 percent to 45 percent. Overall, these findings suggest that intake of omega-3 fatty acids, whether from dietary sources or fish oil supplements, should be increased, especially in those with or at risk for coronary artery disease.&#8217;</p>
<p> The breakthrough is not that fish oils prevent and treat heart disease; we&#8217;ve known that for years. The breakthrough is that the vitamin-and-alternative-health-hating Mayo Clinic is telling the world to take fish oil supplements to prevent heart disease. That signifies the initial stages of a paradigm shift of magnitude.<br />

#9 &#8212; Bone Health Is One Key to Longevity</p>
<p> Bones can no longer be thought of only in terms of fracture risk and osteoporosis. Bones are constantly giving birth to new cells and these cells play vital roles in metabolism and immunity. For example, when bone cells get inflamed not only does this promote excess bone loss it directly causes fat cells to multiply in white adipose tissue &#8212; which clearly explains why women gain weight after menopause as well as the key to stopping the problem.</p>
<p> The highlight study of the year was a detailed gene analysis performed on one of the world&#8217;s healthiest older men (he was 113 at the time, recently passing away at 114). Researchers expected to find genetic advantages enabling him to live a long life. Much to their surprise, he didn&#8217;t have any &#8216;better genes&#8217; at all &#8212; he had better bones! #7 &#8212; Vitamin D for Anything and Everything</p>
<p> A major question during 2008 was: &#8216;Is there anything that vitamin D does not help?&#8217; Vitamin D&#8217;s role in bone metabolism is well known. Its role as a hormone is less well known but very important. As a bewildering array of breaking science now shows, vitamin D is a gene-regulating super nutrient. It is vital for efficient immune function, prevention of autoimmune problems, healthy metabolism, proper thyroid function, prevention of type I and type II diabetes, prevention of heart disease, cancer prevention, and improved nervous system health and mood.</p>
<p> The sunshine vitamin is indeed a wonder nutrient. <p> Tea has been taken by humans since prehistory, and the popularity of green tea has been boosted by the realisation that it combats free radicals enabling it to fight viruses, slow aging, and, generally, have a beneficial effect on health.</p>

<p>  Archaeological evidence suggests that tea leaves steeped in boiling water were consumed as many as 500,000 years ago. Botanical evidence indicates that India and China were among the first countries to cultivate tea.</p>

These antioxidants have been shown to be highly beneficial to the heart by helping prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol.</p>
<p> There are four primary polyphenols in green tea, often collectively referred to as catechins. They are powerful antioxidants, and have been shown in recent studies to fight viruses, slow aging, and have a beneficial effect on health.</p>
<p> Much of the initial evidence that green tea is anti-carcinogenic is based on epidemiological studies which show lower rates of many types of cancer among populations such as Japan and China that drink green tea as part of a daily cultural habit.</p>
<p> Clinical tests have demonstrated that the catechins in green tea destroy free radicals which are highly reactive molecules and fragments of molecules that can damage the body at the cellular level leaving it susceptible to cancer, heart disease, and many other degenerative diseases More recently, controlled studies on green tea extract have yielded impressive results, identifying the polyphenol (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) as the responsible component. EGCG is able to force certain cancer cells into a situation in which they must die or be killed in a process called &#8221;apoptosis&#8221;. Further evidence shows that EGCG has an inhibitory effect on the enzyme, urokinase, which is required for tumor formation, thus preventing the formation of tumors.</p>
<p> It has been shown that (EGCG), an antioxidant found in green tea, is at least 100 more times more effective than vitamin C and 25 times more effective than vitamin E at protecting cells and DNA from damage believed to be linked to cancer, heart disease and other serious illnesses. This antioxidant has twice the <a href="http://www.antioxidantpacksupplement.com/anti-aging-capsules-and-supplements" title="Resveratrol antiaging capsules">benefits of resveratrol</a>, found in red wine.</p>

<p> There are some that still believe that plenty of exercise, a proper diet and the right amount of sleep is really all you need to fight the aging process.</p>
<p> And if it works for them, who am I to argue? I&#8217;m a big proponent of exercise, diet and sleep. You have to start there for any anti aging program to work. But if you&#8217;re doing all that and you&#8217;re still feeling the effects of age, you may want to consider supplementation.</p>
<p> The fact is that researchers have now proven that vitamin supplementation can prevent several common chronic diseases. The average American diet does not provide the optimal amounts of nutrients. However, supplementation is not an adequate substitute for a good diet.</p>
<p> To start, a good quality multivitamin is the core of any supplementation program. With or without iron is a subject of argument, but I would recommend if you need iron supplementation, it should be taken separately as most people get sufficient iron in their diet and too much can pose problems as well as impede absorption of other vitamins.</p>
<p> <strong>Tips on Buying Anti Aging Supplements</strong></p>
<p> * Research before you buy. Know what you are buying, the proper amounts, and any side effects</p>
<p> * Buy a quality brand. It  should have a certificate of analysis, adhere to GMP standards, and use standardized herbal extracts.</p>
<p> * Check first for reactions if you are taking any prescription medications. Some supplements clearly state they are not to be used with certain drugs.</p>

<h2>Should you Use Anti Aging Supplements?</h2>
<p> If you want to slow the aging process, consider anti aging supplements. Here are some things to watch for.</p>

<p>  Everyone wants to slow the aging process, even those who want to &quot;age gracefully&quot;. However, there is a debate going on over whether using <a href="http://www.antioxidantpacksupplement.com/how-do-antioxidants-work" title="Anti aging supplements">anti aging supplements</a>  will really work.</p>
<p> There are some that still believe that plenty of exercise, a proper diet and the right amount of sleep is really all you need to fight the aging process.</p>

<p> And if it works for them, who am I to argue? I&#8217;m a big proponent of exercise, diet and sleep. You have to start there for any anti aging program to work. But if you&#8217;re doing all that and you&#8217;re still feeling the effects of age, you may want to consider supplementation.</p>
<p> The fact is that researchers have now proven that vitamin supplementation can prevent several common chronic diseases. The average American diet does not provide the optimal amounts of nutrients. However, supplementation is not an adequate substitute for a good diet.</p>
<p> To start, a good quality multivitamin is the core of any supplementation program. With or without iron is a subject of argument, but I would recommend if you need iron supplementation, it should be taken separately as most people get sufficient iron in their diet and too much can pose problems as well as impede absorption of other vitamins.</p>
<p> <strong>Tips on Buying Anti Aging Supplements</strong></p>
<p> * Research before you buy. Know what you are buying, the proper amounts, and any side effects</p>
<p> * Buy a quality brand. It  should have a certificate of analysis, adhere to GMP standards, and use standardized herbal extracts.</p>
<p> * Check first for reactions if you are taking any prescription medications. Some supplements clearly state they are not to be used with certain drugs.</p>
<p> * Always check with your physician or an anti aging specialist for the proper dosage and combination.</p>
<p> Beyond that, here is a list of widely accepted (in the anti aging field) supplements you should explore further. I will be going into each one separately in future articles, but here is a brief summary:</p>
<p> * <strong>Alpha lipoic acid</strong> &#8211; a strong antioxidant that has proven to be helpful in a wide variety of conditions including diabetes,stroke,memory and brain function and numerous other benefits</p>
<p> * <strong>Acetyl L-carnitine</strong> &#8211; enhances memory as well as mental quickness</p>
<p> * <strong>Coenzyme Q10 </strong>- has been shown to improve many conditions associated with aging but is most known for it&#8217;s cardiac or heart disease benefits.</p>
<p> * <strong>Green tea extracts</strong> &#8211; green tea catechins may play a role in cognitive enhancement, maintaining proper weight and lowering risk of certain cancers</p>
<p> * <strong>Omega 3 Fish Oil</strong> -Fish Oil supports healthy heart and cardiovascular function, the function of cellular membranes and healthy brain development.</p>
<p> * <strong>Resveratrol </strong>- found in red wine, this powerful antioxidant provides anti-inflammatory, cardio protective and neuro protective functions.</p>
<p> * <strong>Ascorbyl palmitate</strong> &#8211; a fat-soluble Vitamin C, this antioxidant helps protect cells from free radical damage.</p>
<p> * <strong>Vitamin E</strong> &#8211; actually Annatto Tocotrienols, a new type of Vitamin E, helps to promote the cardiovascular system.
<p>Bruce N. Ames, PhD, a professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of California, Berkeley, swears by: his daily 800 mg of alpha-lipoic acid and 2,000 mg of acetyl-L-carnitine. In these amounts, he says, the chemicals boost the energy output of mitochondria, which power our cells. &quot;I think mitochondrial decay is a major factor in aging,&quot; Ames says&#8211;it&#8217;s been linked to diseases such as Alzheimer&#8217;s and diabetes.</p>
<p> This is not a comprehensive listing, nor should you go out and buy a bunch of supplements. Always check with your physician first and you may want to see a doctor specializing in anti aging.</p>
<p> You may also want to be tested first for any deficiencies &#8211; an important step before you start any supplementation.</p>
<p> Should you start an anti aging supplement program? That&#8217;s a personal choice and one Totally up to you. Give any program a chance to do its job &#8211; usually a month or two, before deciding if it works for you.</p>

<p>Resveratrol is found in the skin of red grapes and is a constituent of red wine. A number of beneficial health effects, such as anti-cancer, antiviral, neuroprotective, anti-aging, and anti-inflammatory effects have been linked with resveratrol.</p>

<p>Research has revealed the substance has anti-ageing effects in some organisms, extending the lifespan of yeast by 60%, worms and flies by 30%, and fish by about 60%. Interest in Resveratrol sparked due to the &quot;French Paradox&quot; which reveals that the incidence of coronary heart disease is relatively low in southern France despite a high dietary intake of saturated fats.</p>
<p>Researchers at the University of Rochester studied resveratrol&#8217;s effect on pancreatic cancer. The study revealed that this natural antioxidant can help destroy pancreatic cancer cells by reaching to the cell&#8217;s core energy sources called mitochondria, and then disabling its function. The study also concludeded that when the pancreatic cancer cells were doubly assaulted and pre-treated with the <a href="http://www.antioxidantpacksupplement.com/" title="natural anti oxidant">antioxidant, resveratrol</a>, and irradiated, the combination induced a type of cell death called apoptosis, an important goal of cancer therapy.</p>
<p>In another independent survey research led by David Sinclair and Jos Baur of the Harvard medical school and Raphael de Cabo, showed Resveratrol has benefits in protecting against diabetes. The discovery of this supplements benefits is in its infancy, more benefits are being found every day.</p>
